Crete senesi are locate to the South-west of Siena and include the municipalities of Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d’Arbia, Rapolano Terme, San Giovanni d’Asso and Trequanda, all located in the Siena province.

The name comes from clay, creta, of which this territory in very rich and that gives the territory its characteristic gray – light blue color and a lunar appearance. Clay, mixed with rock salt and chalk, also called “mattaione”, is the proof that the sea was covering this are during the Pliocene period, between 2,5 and 4,5 milion years ago.

The landscape is characterized by sweetly undulating hills, very old oaks and solitary cypress, woods and natural water springs.

The territory shows the tipical ravines, cliffs and “biancane”, cliffs with a white top. Within the Crete senesi you’ll find a natural forestwere squirrels and nane live (“nane” is the way mute ducks are called in Tuscany).
This area is known for the “tartufo bianco or white truffles and hosts a festival and a museum dedicated to the so called “dimond of the Crete”.

This landscape changes continuosly during the different season of the year: the yellow of wheatr during Summer, the brown of the earth during Autumn, dark gray in winter and the brilliant green in Spring. An ever changing show!
