Situated to the northern part of its own territory, Monteriggioni is located on the top of a hill all cultivated with vines and olive plants.
The castle, was built in the early years of 200 by the Republic of Siena as a defensive fortress against their enemies, Florence.
For centuries, this location fulfilled the scope it was built for, goal it was, rejecting many attacks and sieges.
Its military function ceased by the half of 500, when the Siena state was annexed to Florence.
The itinerary unwinds in the Elsa valley to rise towards Castellina in Chianti, following the Chiantigiana road through vines, olive trees and small villages until it reaches Siena.
